Later in the afternoon, as the rain softened to a gentle drizzle, we drove along the coast. The views were breathtaking. Mist clung to the cypress-tree-covered hills, and waterfalls, temporary and beautiful, cascaded down the cliffs towards the sea. It was a side of the island’s beauty we never would have witnessed from a sun lounger.

That evening, back at the hotel, we didn’t feel like we’d lost a day of our holiday. We felt like we’d been given a bonus one. We’d connected with each other, we’d seen a different, more dramatic side of Kefalonia’s beauty, and we’d created a memory that was unique and completely unplanned. It was a perfect reminder that travel isn’t about ticking off a checklist of perfect, sun-filled days. It’s about embracing the experience, whatever it may be.
